Weber's "Das Wohltemperierte Klavier"
Searching for sightreading material, I saw reference to Bernhard Christian Weber in the Wikipedia article on music written in all major and minor keys:
"It was long believed that Bach had taken the title The Well-Tempered Clavier from a similarly named set of 24 Preludes and Fugues in all the keys, for which a manuscript dated 1689 was found in the library of the Brussels Conservatoire. It was later shown that this was the work of a composer who was not even born by 1689: Bernhard Christian Weber (1712–1758). In fact, the work was written in 1745–50 in imitation of Bach's example."
Searching for Weber's version I discovered it was written for organ(!!!) per Max Seiffert. I then discovered a link to a modern digital copy of Weber's Das Wohltemperierte Klavier in the digital collection of Der Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek. Be sure to read the rights and restrictions when downloading found under the "Downloads" item and then under the "Full record" PDF icon.
Weber's 24 preludes and fugues proceed chromatically and are grouped by increasing number of voices in the fugue: the first six have 2-voice fugues, the next six have 3-voice fugues, the following six have 4-voice fugues, and the final six have 5-voice fugues. Comments about the music include "competent" but Thorsten Pirkl has noted, "Of course, Weber's work cannot be compared with Bach's brilliant music, but it is nevertheless astonishing and very remarkable."
Enjoy!
